No. I don't contact your builder. I don't get involved in the job. I talk to you, give you my read on the situation, and you decide what to do with it.
Do I need to tell my builder I'm using you?
No. What you do with the information is up to you. Most people don't mention it — they just use what I tell them to ask better questions or push back with more confidence.
Is this formal advice?
